FAQs

What’s with the name “H&M?”

While you might think of a clothing store and Heather and Michael might like to think of it as representing their names, the letters H&M actually represent Harvey and Melba Kahle whose trust made the original financial and land donations that helped get things started.

You have cows?

Yes we do! Our cattle operation started because we needed a source of revenue and the necessary infrastructure was already in place on the property. We hope to outgrow our need for them at some point, but for now you can enjoy seeing our big bovine as you spend some time with us.

Why is there not permanent internet in the cabins?

We do offer an internet solution, but if we’re honest, a lot of the time it is our digital connectedness that can keep us from being intentional with who or what is right in front of us. This is why it is only by request.

Along the same lines, the cell signal is pretty spotty at H&M. There is enough to make a call or send a text if you need to, but mindlessly scrolling social media is probably going to be more frustrating than anything else. Our hope is that this will be a help to those of us who want to spend intentional time, but have trouble keeping off of our phones and computers long enough for it to be meaningful.

What is there to do?

While much of the point of coming to H&M is to get away from all the “doing,” there are some things to do while you’re here! From fishing on the lake to hiking through the woods, there are many things to do in the great outdoors. Then you can finish the evening with relaxing around the fire pit and watching the sun go down over the lake. You could also stay inside and enjoy the peace and quiet of our cozy cabins - enjoying the fireplace, playing a game, or relaxing with a good book.

Who is this for?

This is for you. While everyone on our board has been involved with ministries whose primary purpose revolves around youth summer camps, that’s not what H&M Retreats is about. Unlike our friends at those ministries, our target audience is adults - specifically, adults who need a break from the normal routine so they can focus on what’s important. If that’s you, this is for you.

I can’t afford this, but I need a retreat. Can I get some help?

We want this to be accessible for anyone who needs it, but we also have to pay the bills! To deal with both of these things, we have set up a sponsorship fund for those who might need a little assistance to make it happen. If you are in need of using it or want to know more about giving toward it, contact sponsor@hmretreats.org.
